Regardless as to what is trending or happening on the runway, the key to dressing well, is knowing some key rules.
The first: know your sizes, and buy clothes that fit you properly-ignore what the number on the size tag says! Clothing that
is too tight and shows "everything" or too loose and baggy will not flatter your figure. Don't be afraid to buy a larger size and have
a tailor properly fit the garment to you!
Second: let style lines, or garment seams help you! Strategically placed seams in a garment can help visually deter the eye,
and make you look slimmer. See the skirt in the example below. The playful placement of the stripes, the body of the skirt is
broken up into many panels, which makes the wearer look slimmer. Color block panels at the side seams also have the
same slimming effect.
Third: know your shape. Not all trends work on all body types. I can't wear skinny jeans, as much as I would like, they don't flatter my shape
so I avoid them at all costs! Have a sense of proper proportion based on your body shape, know what works for your height and body type.
For example, a peplum style (as exampled below) is perfect for curvier women because the "fit and flare" shaping gives the wearer an
"hourglass" figure which is always flattering.
Fourth: Know your budget. There is no point in going in debt over fashion! The clever fashionista can mimic trending looks with brands
that fit your budget. The important thing to remember if on a budget is to buy timeless and quality pieces over trendy pieces. The timeless
pieces will never go out of style, however those neon yellow pair of shoes will be out of style by next season and will date you!
Fifth: Quality accessories, a simple great necklace, a smart bag, quality shoes can make your outfit look more expensive than it may actually be.
Invest wisely based on your budget and need.
